چکیده

The aim of this paper is to study the n variable fragment of rst order logic from a modal perspective We de ne a modal formalism called cylindric mirror modal logic and show how it is a modal version of rst order logic with substitution In this approach we can de ne a semantics for the language which is closely related to algebraic logic as we nd Polyadic Equality Algebras as the modal or complex algebras of our system The main contribution of the paper is a characterization of the intended mirror cubic frames of the formalisms and a consequence of the special form of this characterization a completeness theorem for these intended frames As a consequence we nd complete nite yet unorthodox derivation systems for the equational theory of nite dimensional representable polyadic equality algebras

Substitution as a Device of Grammatical Cohesion in English Contexts

The present study set out to investigate the effect of teaching substitution as a kind of grammatical cohesion on the true identification of confusing substitution elements with cohesive or non-cohesive roles in different contexts and also the production of modal, reporting and conditional contexts through clausal substitution acquaintance. To this end, the following procedures were taken. Firs...

Suhrawardi's Modal Syllogisms

Suhrawardi’s logic of the Hikmat al-Ishraq is basically modal. So to understand his modal logic one first has to know the non-modal part upon which his modal logic is built. In my previous paper ‘Suhrawardi on Syllogisms’(3) I discussed the former in detail. The present paper is an exposition of his treatment of modal syllogisms. On the basis of some reasonable existential presuppositi...

A Uniform Logic of Information Dynamics

Unlike standard modal logics, many dynamic epistemic logics are not closed under uniform substitution. A distinction therefore arises between the logic and its substitution core, the set of formulas all of whose substitution instances are valid. The classic example of a non-uniform dynamic epistemic logic is Public Announcement Logic (PAL), and a well-known open problem is to axiomatize the sub...

Functional Programming with Names and Necessity

All programs interact with their environments in one way or another: they read and write to memory, query users for input, print out results, send data to remote servers, etc. Because increasingly complex environments result in increasingly difficult and error-prone programming, programming languages should facilitate compile-time detection of erroneous interactions with environments. In this d...

Second-order propositional modal logic and monadic alternation hierarchies

We establish that the quantifier alternation hierarchy of formulae of secondorder propositional modal logic (SOPML) induces an infinite corresponding semantic hierarchy over the class of finite directed graphs. This solves an open problem problem of van Benthem (1985) and ten Cate (2006). We also identify modal characterizations of the expressive powers of second-order logic (SO) and monadic se...
